Log Number:12R018PI:Stanley Herwitz
Funding Source:Bruce Tagg - NASA - SMD - ESD Airborne Science Program
Purpose of Flight:Check
Comments:An adjustment was made to the frame rate of the imager and more data was collected at 1500’ AGL over the canal to the south of the airfield. Different GCS antenna configurations were tried (short omni, tall omni and yagi) to determine if greater range could be achieved with the 900 MHz control link. The aircraft was flown out to a distance of 3 miles using a remote ground based observer and signal strength data was collected. The performance of the newly installed transponder was checked with Nor Cal Approach and they received a strong signal with correct altitude reporting. Noise measurements were made with the aircraft on the ground and at altitudes from 500 – 2000 ft. This provides an initial look at the noise footprint of the aircraft. The second SIERRA pilot, Mike Conrardy, performed the takeoff and landing. There were no aircraft squawks and the aircraft and its systems performed well.
