Flight Number:
Payload Configuration:
Surprise Valley payload
Nav Data Collected:
Total Flight Time:
0.92 hours
A note on flight time tracking. It is customary to track time to the tenths of hours. This flight was 55 minutes which actually rounds up to 1.0 hours. The flight time calculated above is 0.92 which will result in growing discrepancies between SOFRS aircraft time and aircraft logbook time.

Purpose of Flight:Check
Comments:Passes over the metal buildings were performed as low as 250'. A long range flight line was performed out to 5 miles to check the performance of two USGS antennas. The 421.5 MHz aircraft control link failed at first and then appeared to work after reinitializing the GCS modem. The aircraft was climbed to 2500' for a transponder check with Norcal Approach. They could not see a signal from the transponder and replied that 2500' was the floor for reception. The aircraft could not be climbed higher because of COA restrictions. Norcal Approach had gotten a signal from the transponder on the last mission to Crows, so nothing might be wrong with the equipment. The intermittent operation of the 421.5 MHz aircraft control link will result in the transceivers being returned for servicing. This link is 5 W which should provide greater range than the 1 W 900 MHz link. The greater range will be needed in Surprise Valley if Iridium performance is unreliable.
