Mission Report (John Sonntag, ATM)

Today's mission is called "Sea Ice - CryoSat", and was designed as an opportunistic mission to take advantage of an unexpected data collection opportunity during the P-3's transit from McMurdo to Christchurch.  A CryoSat-2 overflight happened to fall almost on a direct line from McMurdo to Christchurch at 13:52 local time (00:52z) today, and we flew the groundtrack.  The spacecraft's overflight occurred at 00:52:54 Zulu, as we were flying over consolidated pack ice north-northeast of Cape Adare in clear weather.

We began the CryoSat-2 line (orbit #19293) approximately 50 km inland of the Ross Ice Shelf edge, in order to potentially tie future OIB airborne gravity measurements near the shelf edge with ship-based bathymetry measurements in the western Ross Sea.  As expected, we encountered the large Ross Sea polynya immediately after passing the shelf edge, and spent much of the next hour of flight (at 1500') over open water.  We encountered consolidated pack ice southeast of Cape Adare and continued collecting science data at low altitude until encountering thicker clouds around latitude 65 deg S.  At that point we climbed to cruise altitude and continued into Christchurch, where we landed at approximately 19:00 local time.  Weather was excellent for most of the science line, except for bits of ice fog over the Ross Ice Shelf at the very beginning of the mission, and intermingled broken low stratus and ice fog for the final 30 minutes of data collection at the north end of the line. Overall, the day went quite well.

Data collection started 11/27/2013 22:07 UTC and ended at 11/28/2013 02:06 UTC. In total we collected 4.0 hours of science data.
90% good data for the first 3.5 hrs, 50% good data last 0.5 hr due to clouds.
