Accomplishments

 

  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL and 10,000 ft AGL) over the Greenland Ice Sheet.
  • ATM, albedo, KT-19, snow, Ku-band, accumulation, MCoRDS and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Ramp pass at Thule Air Base at 1,500 ft AGL.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

Today's mission is a new design which occupies a CryoSat-2 ground track over northern Greenland, an ICESat track, and a line connecting the GRIP, NGRIP, NEEM and Camp Century drill sites. It also overflies the ICESat 0412 calibration site at Summit Camp. We choose this area for the CryoSat-2 track because the ground track is approximately orthogonal to the contour lines of the ice sheet, making cross-track placement of the CryoSat-2 footprint more likely to fall at an easily predictable place – nadir. The CryoSat-2 track (21561) will be flown by the CryoSat-2 spacecraft tomorrow (05/03/2014) at 06:40 UTC. The CryoSat-2 track portion of the flight was flown at an AGL altitude of at least 10,000 ft, in order to broaden the ATM swath to better capture the spacecraft's footprint as it wanders in the cross-track direction due to topography. As expected we encountered some clouds around Thule at the beginning and the end of the flight in non-critical parts. We also got into patchy clouds around Summit Camp as expected but the ICESat calibration site over orbit 0412 was clear.

LiDAR data collection started 05/02/2014 11:08 UTC and ended at 17:04 UTC. In total we collected 5.9 hours of science data.
