Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

This is a repeat of a mission first flown in 2012. It is designed to sample sea ice in a large region between the North Basin Transect and the Beaufort-Chukchi Diamond that had been poorly sampled by IceBridge prior to 2012. In addition to Level 1 Requirements SI1 and SI2, the mission addresses sea ice level 1 projected requirement SIP2 by extending the baseline observations into other regions of the Arctic Basin. We also coordinated with simultaneous satellite data collection. The declassified, high-resolution (meter-scale) visible band imagery is available to the community via the Global Fiducials Library (GFL) at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). For more information about this resource see the feature article by by Ron Kwok and Norbert Untersteiner (The thinning of Arctic Sea Ice, Physics Today, April 2011, pages 36-41) and the GFL website at http://gfl.usgs.gov. The objective of the collaborative data collection is to evaluate (a) the feasibility of coordinating observations from these assets and (b) the benefits of the combined observations in characterizing the Arctic sea ice cover.

The weather in the survey area was good with some occasional fog below us. ATM lost 20 minutes on the outbound and inbound survey lines due to low fog. We collected high altitude laser, DMS and radar data over the Agassiz and Prince of Whales Ice Caps during transit. At 16:56 UTC, 18 nautical miles behind EO10 and 100 nautical miles before the end of the line we had to climb in order to land at Thule before 16:00 LT. We were able to collect ATM and DMS data from high latitude over sea ice. The times and cloudiness for the 10 satellite data collections locations are listed below.

Low-altitude data collection started 12:40 UTC and ended at 16:56 UTC. We collected 4.2 hours of low altitude science data and an additional 1.5 hours from high altitude, resulting in a total of 5.7 hours of data collection.
