F11 Helheim-Kangerdlugssuaq

Accomplishments

  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL) over the Helheim and Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier areas.
  • ATM, snow and Ku-band radars, and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Ramp pass at Kangerlussuaq at 4,000 ft AGL for ATM and radar calibration.
  • Conducted pitch and roll maneuvers over the fjord for snow and Ku-band radar calibration.
  • Satellite Tracks: ICESat: 0263.
  • Repeat Mission: 2010, 2011, 2012.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

 
This is a repeat mission, and is very similar to missions flown in 2010, 2011 and 2012. It captures centerline surveys of the two main branches of Helheim, of Kangerdlugssuaq, Fenris and of several branches of Midgard glaciers. We also refly the centerline of the Hutchinson Glacier, and establish a new centerline of a glacier which empties into the fjord of Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier just beyond its terminus.

The weather along the entire survey line was good with exception of some coastal fog in the lower parts of Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier that was visible in the satellite image before takeoff. ATM lost only 5 minutes of data due to fog. Data collection started 11:02 UTC and ended at 18:12 UTC. We collected 7.1 hours of science data.
