Purpose of Flight:Science
Comments:Complete mission as planned. On Fridays the aircraft needs to be back in the hangar at 16:00 instead of 17:00 which limits flight time to 7 hours. No significant issues with science instruments or aircraft. Collected 100% laser returns over sea ice survey lines and additional data over Ellesmere Island during high altitude transits to and from the survey area. Our next opportunity to fly will be Monday, March 31, 2014.

F12 Sea Ice – South Canada Basin

Accomplishments

  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL) over sea ice in the Nares Strait and sea ice and glaciers on Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg Islands.
  • ATM, Albedo, KT-19, snow, Ku-band, accumulation, MCoRDS and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Collected LiDAR, DMS, and MCoRDS data from high altitude to and from the survey area.
  • Repeat Mission: 2013.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

Today's mission is designed to enhance the sampling in the large region between the North Basin Transect and the Beaufort-Chukchi Diamond that had been poorly sampled by IceBridge prior to 2012. This is a region of priority interest to the Canadian Space Agency. In addition to Level 1 Requirements SI1 and SI2, the mission addresses sea ice level 1 projected requirement SIP2 by extending the baseline observations into other regions of the Arctic Basin

Science data collection was successful in clear conditions over the entire survey line without any issues. We were able to collect additional high altitude data over Ellesmere Island to and from the survey area. In order to have the P-3 back in the hangar at 16:00 LT Thule on Fridays (vs 17:00 Mon-Thurs), we had to shorten the mission at the western end.

LiDAR data collection started 03/28/2014 11:11 UTC and ended at 17:54 UTC. In total we collected 6.7 hours of science data.
