F07 Sea Ice - Zigzag East – Nares Strait

Accomplishments

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

 
This mission is a modified version of the similar Zigzag East flight flown in prior years. It is intended to sample the thick multi-year ice near the Greenland coast as well as the gradient to thinner ice closer to the pole. It also samples ice through the Nares Strait, which is of priority interest to the Canadian Space Agency. In addition to Level 1 Requirements SI1 and SI2, the mission addresses sea ice level 1 baseline requirement SI3b by sampling thick multi-year ice near the northern coast of Greenland and the poleward gradient towards thinner ice, and SI3c by sampling the ice in Nares Strait.

We had four high priority mission plans left to choose from this morning, all of them having weather issues. We decided to fly the Zigzag East/Nares Strait mission since it promised the best conditions of the four missions and we also wanted to safe the North Pole Transect flight for a day with better timing for a CryoSat-2 underflight. Shortly before takeoff we got an updated satellite image that indicated relatively good conditions north of Greenland for the Zigzag East mission.

The weather along the entire survey line was good except for some clouds in the southern part of the Nares Strait. Law altitude data collection over sea ice started 12:58 UTC and ended at 18:21 UTC - 5.3 hours. In addition we collected 1.0 hours of science data at high altitude crossing the Greenland Ice Sheet resulting in a total science data collection time of 6.3 hours.
