F06 Sea Ice - South Basin Transect

Accomplishments

  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL) over the Beaufort Sea.
  • ATM, snow and Ku-band radars, and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Ramp pass at Thule Air Base at 1,500 ft AGL for ATM and radar calibration.
  • Satellite Tracks: ICESat ground tracks 0282 and 0284.
  • Repeat Mission: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

 
This mission is a repeat of missions flown each year of Operation IceBridge beginning in 2009. Timing on this flight is very tight because we need predawn twilight lighting conditions for VFR flight once off the northern Alaska coast, but also must land at Thule before the airfield closes at 16:00 local time, which is five hours ahead of Fairbanks local time. Takeoff at Fairbanks was at 1:00 am local time. In addition to Level-1 Requirements SI1 and SI2, it addresses sea ice level 1 baseline requirement SI3a by providing data on the thickness gradient and distribution of perennial and seasonal ice across the Arctic Basin.

The weather along the entire survey line was good and we collected 100% of the planned data. DMS was impacted by the unavoidable darkness until we reached waypoint 028217, or about 50% of the first line. Data collection started 10:38 UTC and ended at 15:30 UTC. We collected 5.0 hours of science data.
