Science data was successful and we saw people on the ground at the survey line near Eureka, plus the Twin Otter TF-POF surveying the line at the same time. We encountered moderate to heavy turbulence over the glaciers on Axel Heiberg Island. We completed the mission as planned with almost 100% surface returns on the lasers.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

This flight was primarily in support for an agreement between NASA HQ and the Canadian Space Agency (SOFRS Flight Request 14P0009), but also includes a short first segment flown for IceBridge (SOFRS Flight Request 14P0008) that needs to be subtracted from the flight hours for 14P009.  In total we spend 3.0 hours collecting data for IceBridge and half-way between the northern end of the line in the Nares Strait and the first CSA line near Eureka. This leaves 5.1 flight hours to be charged to the flight request in support for CSA.

Science data collection was successful. We saw people on the ground at the survey line near Eureka. Surprising for us was to see the Twin Otter TF-POF surveying the line 400 ft below us at the same time with the ASIRAS radar transmitting. We will have to see if this unplanned survey has impacted our snow radar collection since both systems overlap in their frequency ranges. We did 12 passes over the 70-km-long line. We encountered moderate to heavy turbulence over the glaciers on Axel Heiberg Island. Aircraft altitude was maintained at around 3000' AGL to achieve wide-swath tomography with MCoRDS over the glaciers. We completed the mission as planned with almost 100% surface returns on the lasers.

LiDAR data collection started 03/25/2014 11:02 UTC and ended at 18:50 UTC. In total we collected 7.8 hours of science data. The lasers recorded close to 100% of the surface returns.
