Accomplishments

 

  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL) over sea ice across the Arctic Basin.
  • ATM, Albedo, KT-19, snow, Ku-band, accumulation, MCoRDS and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Satellite Tracks: ICESat 0329, 0328, 0334.
  • Repeat Mission: last flown in 2013.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

Today's mission is a near-exact repeat of similar missions flown each year of OIB beginning in 2009. In addition to Level-1 Requirements SI1 and SI2, the flight addresses sea ice level 1 baseline requirement SI3a by providing data on the thickness gradient and distribution of perennial and seasonal ice across the Arctic Basin.

Today we did not have a choice in making a weather decision because we had to relocate the P-3 to Fairbanks for flights over the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. Fortunately, the weather along the survey line was mostly good with a system just sitting south of us. We were able to underfly clouds, occasionally surveying at 1,200 ft AGL, and collect data along the entire line. We also collected data from high altitude between the end of the line and the coast of Alaska. It is very rare that an area as large as the entire Arctic Basin is cloud free at 1,500 ft AGL or below.

LiDAR data collection started 03/14/2014 13:13 UTC and ended at 03/14/2014 20:20 UTC. In total we collected 7.1 hours of science data. 5.5 hours of the data was collected at low altitude with the wide-swath ATM T4 laser scanner. The lasers recorded 100% of the surface returns.
