Mission Summary: 

F01 Sea Ice Nansen Gap


  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL) over sea ice north of the Fram Strait.
  • ATM, Albedo, KT-19, snow, Ku-band, accumulation, MCoRDS and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Collected MCoRDS test data over the Greenland Ice Sheet from high altitude and down to 2,000 ft AGL.

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

Today's mission is a modified version of the Fram Gateway missions flown in several of the past years and last flown in 2012. It differs from them in that it transits to and from the area of the Fram Strait at high-altitude, leaving more time to sample ice farther north and east than in prior years. In addition to Level 1 Requirements SI1 and SI2, this mission addresses sea ice level 1 baseline requirements SI3c and d by sampling sea ice north of Fram Strait. During the high-altitude transit across northern Greenland on the way back to Thule, we collected multi-beam MCoRDS data as test for future tomographic imaging of the bedrock. Another MCoRDS data set along the same profile with different settings is planned to be collected in conjunction with the Zigzag East and Giles Gateway flights if we have the opportunity to fly them during this deployment.

We had planned to fly the Canada Basin North mission today but dense low clouds prevented us from doing so (see Fig. 2). Instead, the area north of the Fram Strait was mostly clear on the satellite image and we decided to fly mission plan Nansen Gap. It turned out to be the right decision. We were close to the margin of the sea ice (Fig. 1). The weather was great and we recorded 100% surface returns. Because the crew needed to take care of a minor maintenance issue we had to delay takeoff by half an hour and had to make up time by cutting turns short 40 nautical miles before the eastern end of the survey line. We saw a sunset there at 25°E and a second one later at Thule Air Base. Before landing we did a ramp pass at 2000 ft AGL at Thule Air Base for instrument calibration.

LiDAR data collection started 03/12/2014 11:38 iUTC and ended at 18:54 UTC. In total we collected 7.2 hours of science data. 3.4 hours of this was low altitude data collected with T4. The lasers recorded 100% of the surface returns.
