Comments:RSD flew the third and final full research flight for ACES 2015 Campaign. This flight plan was to proceed at high altitude off the SC coast and pick up the track of the OCO-2 A-Train satellite and follow it northbound into W-72. This flight plan was flown, but there was significant cloud weather to deal with. Initial climb to FL310 did not get us clear of clouds while enroute to OXANA, so a request to FL250 was made and we were still in mid-high cirrus with occasional visibility of 10 nm and view to the surface. Mostly, we were in cirrus with overcast/broken deck below until intersecting AR-9 north of W-72. At this time, the skies parted and we could see the ground well enough to pick a spiral point at the intersection of AR-9 and the satellite track. The spiral down was flown to 150’ AGL with the bottom of the spiral coincidental with the satellite overpass time of 18:06:32Z. By this time, however, I believe high altitude clouds may have obscured the satellite’s view of the spiral point. The spiral up was over the same point until FL150 when we had to shift 10 nm to the east to remain VMC. Then transitioned to an enroute climb toward ZIBUT, turned around and was able to have occasional views clear to the ground on the AR-9 track back to KLFI.
