Purpose of Flight:Science
Comments:Airfield pass over SCCI at 1500 ft. for position checks. Four long lines arching over Pine Island Glacier and the high ground to the northwest. All instruments recorded data. ATM LIDAR recorded 43 Gb of data, Cambot 82 Gb, ZenithCam 400 Mb, Albedo 3.2 MCoRDS 1.3 Tb recorded DMS recorded 92.6 Gb Gravimeter 2 Gb Snow & Ku radar 447 Gb/ea. Flight was uneventful.

F12 Pine Island Glacier Arch

Accomplishments

  • Low-altitude survey (1,500 ft AGL) over Pine Island Glacier.
  • ATM, albedo, KT-19, snow, Ku-band, MCoRDS, gravimeter, and DMS were operated on the survey lines.
  • Collected additional high altitude data on transits to and from the survey area.
  • Ramp pass at Punta Arenas airport after takeoff at 1,500 ft AGL.
  • Elevation maneuvers (aka pitch and roll maneuvers) for snow and Ku-band radar validation.
  • Satellite tracks: ICESat: 0094, 0130, 0249, 0213, 0332, 0368, 1350, 1314.
  • Repeat Mission: 2010

Mission Report (Michael Studinger, Mission Scientist)

Today's mission is a repeat of a 2010 flight. It is primarily intended to provide measurements of ice surface elevation change beyond those provided by other Pine Island Glacier IceBridge flights. We accomplish this by sampling the numerous tributaries feeding into the main Pine Island Glacier trunk. We had a camera team from HBO/VICE on board the aircraft today.

LiDAR data collection started 11/06/2014 15:25 UTC and ended at 20:30 UTC. In total we collected 5.1 hours of LiDAR data. Conditions in the survey area were perfect. ATM recorded 100% surface returns.
