Comments:Purpose of Flight: CO2 & O2 LIDAR Development Flights – Midwest Flight Science Flt #5 Aircraft Status: Airworthy Sensor Status: MFLL, CO2/O2 Sounder, LAS, AVOCET, Piccaro all operated. ARMAS flew as piggyback instrument under FR148006. Significant Issues: None Accomplishments The flight Tuesday night / Wednesday morning went very well. Iowa and Indianapolis were mostly clear. Some patches of clouds and fogs were observed as expected. The flight pattern as the same as planned, that is: 1) Fly directly to Iowa to conduct three box flight patterns at 16, 25 and 35 kft altitudes. In this case, the north leg was just above the tower site. 2) Spiral around the tower site from top altitude to 1500ft. Darkness/visibility was one of the limitations for the lowest altitude of the spiral. 3) Climb to 16 kft and head to Indie. 4) Conduct two box flight patterns at 16 kft and 35 kft altitude in Indie. 5) Come back to Palmdale. The take-off of the flight was at 5:55UT on Sept 3 (0r 10:55pm PDT on 2 Sept). About 3 hrs later, the flight arrived Iowa. Finishing the three boxes and spiral, the DC-8 reached Indianapolis around 12:40 UT and made the two box flights. The whole flight took 11.5 hours and got back Palmdale at about 17:30 UT (or 10:30 AM PDT). The attached shows the entire flight pattern. All instruments performed very well. Plenty of remotely sensed and in-site measured data were obtained. A clear contrast between 395ppm at aloft and 384 ppm at bottom of the spiral was found. Detailed analysis of these data is needed in coming months. After finishing this Midwest respiration and urban emission flight, the ASCENDS measurement group has successfully accomplished planned flights for its science objectives of this flight campaign. Planned events: Deintegration will start 9/4.
