Big changes with time, & latitude. At north end, abt 12.0 km; south end, 8.2 to 8.9 km. 11,12 MTP shows trop rises going north fr latitude 39.0 - 39.3 deg, during 1st & 2nd legs (at 12.4 km). 11,12 Oakland RAOB shows trop rising from 7.9 to 11.9 km during 12 hrs surrounding flt times. Meford, OR shows 11,12 trop stable at 12.2 to 12.3 km. 15 Region between 11.9 & 12.6 could contain trop. 16 Region 11.0 to 11.6 km could contain trop. 18 Last leg, at 12.4 km: trop varies between 11.9 & 12.3 km (refer to MP-file; average abt 4 cy to reduce stochastic noise). 19 Ascent shows possible 2nd trop at 15.0 km. Deep trop-critical lapse rate extends from 12.4 to 15.0 km. 20 Descent shows deep region with trop-critical lapse rate, from 12.1 to 14.9 km! 21 Small chance that trop is at 13.6 km (MMS), but MTP argues for 12.3 km (also consistent with MMS). 22 MMS has 3 candidate trops, 11.9, 12.7 & 15.2 km. MTP argues for 12.3 +/- 0.5 km, favoring the lower two candidates. 21,22 Oakland RAOB says trop went from 12.4 to 11.9 km from before to after flight. 21,22 Considering all 3 methods, trop probably = 12.0 km. 23 South end has 2 trop candidates, 15.8 & 17.2 km, with 15.8 km favored; north end has one trop candidate, 15.9 km. 33 Additional analysis shows that the 16.0 km trop candidate is untenable, using MTP data. Trop's at 17.4 km. 18 {number of normal comment lines after this one} Here's a brief tutorial on what follows: 1st column is a monotonic sequence # (also used to reference special comments) 2nd column is date of flight, YYMMDD format 3rd column is code for ascent (1), 1st dip (2), 2nd dip (3) & descent (4) 4th column is tropopause pressure altitude [km] 5th column is +SE of tropopause altitude [km] 6th column is -SE of tropopause altitude [km] 7th column is potential temperature at the tropopause [K] 8th column shows relative reliance on MTP & MMS: where 0=MMS only, 1=MMS mostly, 2=MTP & MMS, 3=MTP mostly, 4=MTP only 9th column is revision date for this line of data 4=MTPonly 1=ASC 3=MTPmstly FLT 2=DIP 2=MTP&MMS DATE 3=DIP TROP 1=MMSmstly Revision Seq# YYMMDD 4=DSC PALT SE+ SE- THETA 0=MMSonly Date 1 950503 1 11.9 0.3 0.2 335 2 970611 2 950503 4 11.8 0.2 0.2 336 3 970611 3 950508 1 12.4 0.2 0.2 344 3 960426 4 950508 2 12.0 0.7 1.5 337 4 960426 5 950508 4 12.2 0.2 0.2 337 1 970611 6 950511 1 13.0 0.1 0.3 352 2 970611 7 950511 2 14.8 0.2 0.4 357 4 970611 8 950511 4 13.0 0.1 0.1 344 2 970611 9 950512 1 12.7 0.3 0.3 0 1 970411 10 950512 4 13.0 0.1 0.1 0 1 970611 11 950515 1 8.3 0.3 0.2 0 1 960426 12 950515 4 11.9 0.3 1.0 0 0 960426 13 950516 1 12.5 0.1 0.1 0 2 960426 14 950516 4 12.0 0.2 0.3 0 1 970611 15 950517 1 11.3 0.3 0.3 0 0 970611 16 950517 4 10.9 0.1 0.1 0 1 970611 17 950518 1 12.4 0.1 0.1 0 2 970611 18 950518 4 12.1 0.1 0.1 0 3 970611 19 951020 1 12.5 0.2 0.2 0 2 960426 20 951020 4 12.2 0.2 0.2 0 1 960426 21 951024 1 12.3 0.2 0.3 0 3 970611 22 951024 4 12.0 0.2 0.3 0 2 970611 23 951026 1 15.9 0.3 0.3 0 4 960426 24 951026 4 15.9 0.2 0.5 0 1 960426 25 951031 1 11.2 0.3 0.3 0 2 960426 26 951031 1 14.3 1.0 1.0 0 3 960426 27 951031 4 14.4 0.7 0.7 0 2 960426 28 951031 4 10.9 0.2 0.2 0 0 960426 30 951102 1 11.8 0.1 0.1 0 1 960426 31 951102 4 14.4 0.2 0.2 0 2 960426 32 951105 1 15.0 0.1 0.1 0 2 960426 33 951105 2 17.4 0.2 0.2 0 3 970611 34 951105 4 16.3 0.2 0.4 0 2 960426 35 951107 1 15.7 0.3 0.3 0 4 960426 36 951109 1 15.0 0.2 1.6 0 2 960426 37 951109 2 16.1 0.2 0.2 0 4 960426 38 951109 4 16.7 0.2 0.2 0 2 960426 39 951109 4 12.0 0.1 0.1 0 1 960426 40 960126 1 11.9 0.2 0.2 0 4 960430 41 960126 4 12.4 0.2 0.2 0 4 960430 42 960129 1 12.3 0.1 0.1 0 3 960430 43 960129 4 12.2 0.1 0.2 0 3 960430 44 960201 1 12.1 0.1 0.1 0 2 960430 45 960201 2 11.4 1.0 2.0 0 4 960430 46 960201 4 12.1 0.1 0.1 0 2 960430 47 960202 1 11.7 0.1 0.1 0 3 960312 48 960202 4 11.7 0.1 0.1 0 3 960312 49 960205 1 11.2 0.2 0.2 0 0 960430 50 960205 2 15.7 0.0 5.0 0 0 960430 51 960205 4 16.7 0.1 0.2 0 0 960430 52 960208 1 17.2 0.2 0.2 0 4 960212 53 960212 1 16.7 0.2 0.2 0 2 960430 54 960212 4 16.7 0.2 0.2 0 2 960430 55 960213 1 16.1 0.1 0.1 0 2 960430 56 960213 2 16.6 0.1 0.2 0 2 960430 57 960213 4 15.7 0.2 0.2 0 1 960430 58 960215 1 15.6 0.2 0.2 0 0 960430 59 960215 2 15.8 0.2 0.5 0 4 960430 60 960215 4 15.5 0.2 0.2 0 0 960430 61 960215 4 11.7 0.2 0.2 0 0 960430
