The reproducibility of these quantities should be about 0.1 K. The three brightness temperatures currently provided are: (1) On Strong CO2 lines --The first quantity is the brightness temperature average for discrete HIS samples on opaque CO2 lines in the 15-micron band (located at 671.424, 672.802, 674.455, 676.108, 679.139, and 680.792 cm-1). These lines were chosen because they are sensitive to a region close to the aircraft (order 1 km), but are not strong enough to be influenced by the aircraft itself. (2) Between Strong CO2 lines --The second quantity is the brightness temperature average for several discrete HIS samples between the opaque CO2 lines used for the On-line product above (located at 671.975, 672.251, 673.629, 675.282, 676.935, 678.312, and 679.965, 681.618 cm-1). These lines were chosen because they see deeper into the stratosphere. Therefore, in combination with the On-line product, they indicate the sign and relative size of the stratospheric lapse rate. (3) Window channel brightness temperature --The third quantity is the brightness temperature averaged from 782 to 789 cm-1, a region where the atmospheric transmission is maximum. Therefore this brightness temperature is generally within a few degrees of the surface temperature for clear skies, and indicates the approximate cloud temperature when solid clouds are present. 8453
