BC data observed in clouds contain uncharacterized artifacts and are also assigned NANs using Cloud Indicator V1.0 (K. Froyd) based on CAPS, CPI, and 2D-S data. The volume-equivalent diameter range of the sizes detected are 150-700 nm for the flights of 20060109, 20060130, 20060201, 20060202, and 100-600 nm for the flights of 20060206, 20060207, 20060209, 20060211. As such, the SP2 does not detect all of the BC mass. Assuming a single-mode BC distribution, the appropriate corresponding scale factors to apply to these groups of flights are 1.7 and 1.1, respectively. Please refer to Schwarz et al. (2006) in JGR for more details. The reported BC mass concentrations are assigned 30 percent systematic uncertainty from flow and mass calibration and aspiration efficiency for all flights. An additional <10 percent uncertainty exists on ascent and descent during 20060209 and 20060211 due to an erroneous temperature measurement in the sample flow.
