The SLS is a heterodyne emission radiometer measuring atmospheric spectra near 650 GHz. In the SLS-2, the original Schottky diode mixer, used in the initial frequency downconversion, has been replaced with an SIS junction mixer that affords 20 times increase in receiver sensitivity. The new receiver is also in-flight frequency tunable from 610 to 680 GHz. This capability permits several additional gas species to be measured. Data analysis was performed as for the original SLS. Limb scan spectral data are 'inverted' using an atmospheric radiance model and a linear least squares type retrieval algorithm (e.g. Rodgers, Inverse Methods for Atmospheric Sounding, World Scientific,2000) 13 Balloon flight notes: The balloon and payload (a multi-instrumented gondola including the SAO FIRS-2 interferometer, and JPL in-situ O3 instruments) were launched from the Swedish Space Corp. ESRANGE base by the CSBF near Kiruna, Sweden (67.8N, 21E). The 4 MCF volume balloon reached an altitude maximum of approximately 28 km. Duration at float altitude was limited to approximately 40 minutes due to an unexpected balloon trajectory toward the Gulf of Bothnia. The balloon was launched into the desired polar vortex conditions: temperature in the lower stratosphere below 190K Regarding the data 'discontinuities:The data set has many occurrences of missing values (999s) At this time the SLS 'backend' uses 2 Eos MLS type filterbank spectrometers which provide only a few narrow channels required for measurement of ClO, HO2, BrO, HOCl. Species with stronger emission features O3, HCl can be measured using the broader spectrometer channels. As a result, only 1 species may be measured in high spectral resolution at any one time. Continuous coverage high resolution digital spectrometers are in development which will reduce (or eliminate) the data gaps. Due to the marginal duration of this flight only profiles of ClO, O3 and HCl were obtained.
