Sampling alternates between aerosol inlet and CVI (cloud particle) inlet. Only aerosol inlet data products are reported here. Typically the PALMS size range spans the peak of the aerosol mass mode. Single particles are classified into the particle types shown below. Number fractions of these particle types are calculated over each time segment, and these averages are presented as the primary data products. Some additional chemical data products are also given. PALMS alternates between positive and negative ion detection mode, which yields different data products. If there were at least 5 suitable particles in a time interval, average values are calculated. The number of particles used to calculate the averages is also reported. Other data products, including size-resolved composition, are available - contact the PI. ***Positive ion mode data products: SeaSaltFrac, MineralFrac, SootFrac, BioBurnFrac, SulfOrgNitFrac, OilCombFrac, UnclassFrac The sea salt fraction (0 to 1) is the number fraction of particles that are identified as sea salt. Likewise for particles identified as mineral/meteoric/metallic, soot, aerosol from biomass burning, sulfate-organic-nitrate internal mixtures, heavy oil combustion (Vanadium tracer), and unclassified particles. ***Negative ion mode data products: SulfMF, OrgMF Averages are given for sulfate and organic mass fractions (0 to 1). These parameters are calibrated quantities and are only calculated for particles that are sulfate-organic-nitrate internal mixtures (which is often the predominant particle type). ***Acidity data product: SulfNeut This is the average degree of sulfuric acid neutralization calculated only for particles that are sulfate-organic-nitrate internal mixtures. It is reported as the ammonium-to-sulfate ratio, NH4:SO4. This calibrated product becomes insensitive to the degreee of neutralization for highly neutralized sulfate. Values >=2 are therefore not quantitative but nevertheless indicate complete neutralization. 18 PI_CONTACT_INFO: Karl.Froyd@noaa.gov & DJCziczo@mit.edu & Daniel.M.Murphy@noaa.gov PLATFORM: NASA WB-57 LOCATION: MACPEX, Houston, TX ASSOCIATED_DATA: N/A INSTRUMENT_INFO: The Particle Analysis by Laser Mass Spectrometry instrument measures single particle composition DATA_INFO: Units: Frac products: number fractions from 0-1.
